Cancel a German contract (Kündigung) — gym, phone, subscription

The standard letter for ending a subscription-style contract: gym, mobile plan, internet, insurance, streaming. Since 2022, contracts renew for at most one month at a time after the minimum term — so this letter, sent on time, always gets you out.

Before you send it

  • “Zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt” (earliest possible date) is the safe formula — the provider must apply the correct end date even if you don't know it.
  • After the minimum term, notice is at most one month (contracts signed since March 2022).
  • Many providers must offer an online cancellation button (Kündigungsbutton) — that's often faster than a letter, and equally binding.
  • For proof, send by Einschreiben (registered post) or use the provider's online form and screenshot the confirmation.
