Quiet hours (Ruhezeit) and Sunday rest

Germany protects rest times by law and custom. Loud activities at night or on Sundays can lead to complaints — or fines.

Rest periods (Ruhezeiten) are widely observed: typically night quiet (Nachtruhe) from 22:00 to 06:00, often a lunch quiet period, and all day on Sundays and public holidays.

  • Avoid drilling, loud music, vacuuming and using a washing machine late at night.
  • Don't mow the lawn, run power tools or do loud DIY on Sundays and public holidays.
  • Glass recycling containers should not be used during quiet hours either.
Watch out: Repeated noise complaints can lead to trouble with your landlord and, in serious cases, fines under local Lärmschutz rules. When in doubt, keep it quiet on Sundays.
Good to know: Shops are also closed on Sundays (Ladenschluss). Plan grocery shopping for Saturday — only stations, airports and some bakeries stay open.

Heads up: this is general orientation, not legal, tax or immigration advice. Rules and amounts vary by city and Bundesland and change over time — always confirm with the official source before acting.
