EU/EEA/Swiss citizens don't need a visa. For everyone else, here are the main residence routes — and a checker to find yours.
EU Blue Card
Degree + a job offer meeting the salary threshold.
- Fast track to permanent residence
- Family can join with work rights
- 2025 threshold ~€48,300 (lower for shortage roles)
Skilled Worker visa
Recognized qualification + a matching job offer.
- Degree or vocational qualification
- Recognition (anabin) may be required
- Standard route below the Blue Card threshold
Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)
Qualified, want to come and look for a job.
- Points: qualification, experience, language, age
- Proof of funds to support yourself
- Switch to a work permit once hired
Student visa
Admission to a German university or prep course.
- Admission letter required
- Blocked account (Sperrkonto) as proof of funds
- Health insurance mandatory
Family reunion
Joining a family member living in Germany.
- Sponsor's status, housing & income matter
- Spouses often need A1 German
- Apply at the German mission
