Cancel a Telekom contract (Kündigung) — mobile, DSL or Glasfaser

Telekom contracts are famously hard to get out of — not because cancelling is legally difficult, but because the cancellation route is buried. Here is what the law actually gives you, where the cancellation button has to be, and a letter you can send if you would rather not hunt for it.

Before you send it

  • Look for the cancellation button first. Since 1 July 2022, § 312k BGB requires any company that lets you sign up online to show a clearly labelled „Verträge hier kündigen“ button that is just as easy to reach as the sign-up. It must work without logging in. If you cannot find it, that is a legal failure on their side — and it means your cancellation deadline does not start running against you in the usual way.
  • Notice period: for contracts signed since 1 March 2022, the minimum term is at most 24 months, and after it ends the contract continues indefinitely with one month’s notice at any time. Older contracts may still carry a three-month notice period and a twelve-month renewal.
  • Text form is enough (§ 126b BGB): email or the online form is legally valid. You do not need a signature, a fax or registered post. What you do need is proof — always ask for written confirmation of the end date.
  • Moving house? § 60 TKG gives you a special right: if the provider cannot deliver the same service at your new address, you can cancel with one month’s notice regardless of the minimum term. If they can deliver it, they may move the contract instead — but then the price must stay the same.
  • Keeping your number: request the portation (Rufnummernmitnahme) in the same letter, or you may lose it. You can port a number up to three months after the contract ends.
  • Leaving Germany is not by itself a special right to cancel. Moving abroad usually still requires the ordinary notice period — plan the cancellation before you go, not after.
