The recognition application, field by field

Recognition asks one question: is your foreign qualification equivalent to the German reference occupation? There is no single national form, because the competent body differs by profession and state. What is uniform is the law behind it: a complete application must be decided within three months, and the clock only starts once the file is complete — which is why the document pack matters more than the form.

Official name: Antrag auf Feststellung der Gleichwertigkeit (Anerkennung ausländischer Berufsqualifikationen)
Who needs it: Anyone whose profession is regulated in Germany (health care, teaching, law, many crafts), and anyone who wants a formal comparison of a foreign qualification to strengthen applications.

Where to get the official form

We don't host government forms — they are revised without notice, and an outdated copy gets rejected. These links go to the issuing authority.

Have these ready before you start

  • Proof of identity
  • Your qualification certificates and transcripts, plus certified translations into German by a publicly appointed and sworn translator
  • A tabular CV in German listing your training and work history without gaps
  • Evidence of relevant work experience (references, employment certificates)
  • A declaration stating whether you have already applied for recognition elsewhere in Germany

What you are applying for

Referenzberuf in Deutschland

German reference occupation

The German occupation you want your qualification compared to. Name it exactly as it appears in the German system — the finder on the official portal gives you the correct term.

Watch out: Choosing the wrong reference occupation is the most expensive mistake here: the assessment answers the question you asked, and asking again means a new procedure and a new fee.

Im Ausland erworbener Abschluss

Qualification obtained abroad

The exact title, the institution, the country and the year, as printed on the certificate.

Land, in dem der Abschluss erworben wurde

Country where the qualification was awarded

EU/EEA qualifications often follow a faster route under the professional-qualifications directive than qualifications from other countries.

Angaben zur Berufserfahrung

Work experience

Where, how long and doing what. Experience can offset differences between the training programmes, so document it properly rather than summarising.

Your situation in Germany

Wohnsitz / geplanter Arbeitsort

Residence / intended place of work

This decides which state's body is competent. You can apply from abroad — residence in Germany is not required to start the procedure.

Sprachkenntnisse

Language skills

State your level. For regulated professions, especially in health care, a professional language examination is a separate requirement on top of recognition.

Erklärung über frühere Anträge

Declaration about earlier applications

Whether you have applied for recognition of the same qualification elsewhere in Germany. Parallel applications are not allowed and are checked.

Documents

Beglaubigte Kopien und Übersetzungen

Certified copies and translations

Copies certified by an authority (many town halls do this), translations by a publicly appointed and sworn translator. Ordinary translations and personal copies are refused.

Watch out: Send certified copies, not originals, unless the body explicitly demands originals — documents do get lost in the post.

Tabellarischer Lebenslauf in deutscher Sprache

Tabular CV in German

Chronological, no gaps, in the German format. It is used as evidence, not as a job application.

The mistakes that cost people

  • Applying to the wrong body. Competence depends on profession and state, so use the official finder rather than the first address you find.
  • Using an ordinary translator. Only publicly appointed and sworn translators are accepted.
  • Sending an incomplete file. The three-month decision period only starts when the file is complete, so gaps cost months.
  • Assuming recognition includes the language certificate. For regulated professions the professional language exam is separate.
  • Not planning for a partial result. A partial equivalence with named differences is a normal outcome, and there are adaptation courses and aptitude tests to close them — it is not a rejection.

How to submit it

  1. 1Use the Anerkennungs-Finder to identify the competent body for your profession in the state where you will work.
  2. 2Request that body's application form and its exact document list — the list is what governs, not a generic checklist.
  3. 3Have your documents certified and translated by a sworn translator before sending anything.
  4. 4Send the complete application, keep copies, and pay the fee the body sets (typically a few hundred euros, plus translation costs).

What happens next

By law the competent body decides within three months of receiving a complete application. The outcome is full equivalence, partial equivalence with the differences named, or no equivalence — and a partial result comes with a route to close the gap. Under some conditions funding exists for the fees and courses; ask the body or a local IQ-Netzwerk advisory centre, whose advice is free.

Common questions

Do I need recognition to work in Germany?

Only for regulated professions — you cannot work as a nurse, doctor, teacher or in a licensed craft without it. In unregulated fields it is optional, but a formal comparison makes an unfamiliar qualification legible to employers.

Can I apply before I move to Germany?

Yes. The procedure can be started from abroad, and doing so early is usually the single best use of your waiting time.

What does it cost?

The fee is set by the competent body and typically runs to a few hundred euros, plus certified translations. Funding programmes exist for people on low incomes — ask before you pay.

What if the result is only partial equivalence?

That is a normal outcome, not a refusal. The decision names the differences, and adaptation training or an aptitude test closes them; for several professions this is the standard path.
