Anmeldung: registering your address
Almost everything in Germany starts with the Anmeldung. Register your home address at the Bürgeramt to unlock your tax ID, bank account and more.
The Anmeldung is the official registration of your address with the local registration office (Bürgeramt / Einwohnermeldeamt). It is the foundation for almost everything else: tax ID, bank account, residence permit, even a gym contract sometimes asks for it.
Watch out: You are generally expected to register within 14 days of moving into your new home. Many cities are lenient, but a late Anmeldung can in theory be fined up to €1,000.
What you need to bring
- Valid passport or national ID
- Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (confirmation of move-in, signed by your landlord)
- Completed registration form (Anmeldeformular) — usually downloadable from your city's website
- If registering family members: marriage / birth certificates
Step by step
- 1Book an appointment (Termin) online — in big cities slots fill up fast, so book early.
- 2Ask your landlord for the signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung after you move in.
- 3Go to the appointment with your documents.
- 4Receive your Meldebescheinigung (registration certificate) — keep it safe, you'll need copies.
- 5Your tax ID (Steuer-ID) is then mailed to you automatically within ~2–3 weeks.
Tip: No appointments available? Check the booking page early in the morning, or look at Bürgerämter in neighbouring districts — you can usually register at any office in your city.
