Residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) basics
Non-EU nationals usually need a residence permit. Learn who needs one, where to apply, and how the Ausländerbehörde appointment works.
EU/EEA/Swiss citizens have freedom of movement and do not need a residence permit. Most other nationals need an Aufenthaltstitel (residence permit) to live and work in Germany beyond a short stay.
Common permit types
- EU Blue Card (Blaue Karte) — for qualified professionals meeting a salary threshold; fast track to permanent residence.
- Work permit for skilled workers (Fachkräfte)
- Student residence permit
- Job seeker / Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)
- Family reunion permit
How to apply
- 1Complete your Anmeldung first — you'll need the registration certificate.
- 2Get health insurance (mandatory).
- 3Book an appointment with the Ausländerbehörde (immigration office).
- 4Bring passport, biometric photos, proof of income/contract, health insurance, and the Meldebescheinigung.
- 5Pay the fee and collect your electronic residence card (eAT) when ready.
Watch out: Start early. Ausländerbehörde appointments can take weeks or months. If your current permit/visa is about to expire, request a Fiktionsbescheinigung — it legally bridges the gap while your application is processed.
