Opening a bank account (Girokonto)

A current account (Girokonto) is needed for salary, rent and direct debits. Compare traditional banks and app-based banks, and learn about SCHUFA.

A Girokonto (current account) gives you an IBAN for receiving your salary and paying rent, utilities and contracts by SEPA direct debit (Lastschrift).

Your options

  • App-based banks (N26, etc.) — quick English sign-up, often no Anmeldung needed to start.
  • Direct banks (DKB, comdirect, ING) — free accounts, good online tools.
  • Branch banks (Sparkasse, Volksbank) — local branches, helpful if you prefer in-person service.
Good to know: SCHUFA is Germany's main credit-scoring agency. Landlords and some banks check it. A thin SCHUFA file is normal when you just arrived — it builds over time as you pay bills on time.
Tip: Get a real Girocard (formerly EC-Karte), not only a credit card. Many smaller shops, bakeries and Pfand machines in Germany still prefer Girocard or cash.

Heads up: this is general orientation, not legal, tax or immigration advice. Rules and amounts vary by city and Bundesland and change over time — always confirm with the official source before acting.
