Liability insurance (Haftpflichtversicherung)

It's not legally required, but personal liability insurance is one of the cheapest and most recommended policies in Germany.

Private liability insurance (Privathaftpflichtversicherung) covers damage you accidentally cause to other people or their property — from breaking a friend's laptop to a serious accident. In Germany you can be held fully liable for such damages.

Tip: It's typically only a few euros a month and considered close to essential. Many landlords and situations effectively assume you have it.
Good to know: Other common policies: household contents (Hausratversicherung), legal protection (Rechtsschutz), and, if you drive, car insurance (Kfz-Versicherung) which IS mandatory.

Heads up: this is general orientation, not legal, tax or immigration advice. Rules and amounts vary by city and Bundesland and change over time — always confirm with the official source before acting.
