Exchange your driving licence in Germany

Many foreign driving licences are only valid for six months after you register in Germany — after that you must convert to a German licence at the Führerscheinstelle. Whether you also have to sit the theory and/or practical exam depends entirely on the country that issued your licence.

• ✓EU/EEA licences stay valid and only need swapping when they expire; the six-month clock mainly affects non-EU licences.
• ✓Some countries (and US/Canadian states) have full reciprocity — no exams needed; others require the theory test, the practical, or both. Check your country's status before you start.
• ✓You'll usually need a certified translation (ADAC or a sworn translator) and an eyesight test from an optician — sort these before your appointment.
• ✓Start within the six-month window: drive on an expired-for-Germany foreign licence and you're effectively driving without a licence.
